Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful winter break and holiday season with friends and family. It is hard to believe we are halfway through the school year. We have co-created such a wonderful learning community and there is more that we will learn, explore and discover together in 2017. Below are some of the units we’ll study during these months of December and January. Have fun discussing them with your children. Our goal is to value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction. Some examples of activities that build this skill include demonstrations, communication, partner work, group discussions, and role plays.
Kindergarten In kindergarten, students will work on cooperative games and station like activities to help improve teamwork, student’s hand eye coordination, and muscular strength. Warm up part that includes children’s yoga and endurance exercises that foster flexibility, cardiovascular, abdominal and muscular strength. In the middle of January we’ll begin a new unit that includes Fitness gram test activities. We incorporate the use of fitness gram components into the above stated activities to further improve their cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility.
1st Grade In January we’ll begin Fitness Gram testing. We incorporate the use of fitness gram components into relay race activities, obstacle course activities and teamwork building games to further improve their cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility. Children will participate in yoga and endurance exercises that foster flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and body composition.
2nd – 3rd Grade
|The second and third grade Fitness Gram test is an introduction and a preparation to the health-related components of fitness. These components include cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. The students learn the proper way to perform exercises that improve their strength and muscular endurance, their cardiovascular endurance and flexibility as well. When performing these exercises, the students are also taught the muscles being used for each different exercise. Some type of strength training is incorporated into each and every lesson throughout the unit. These components are important in staying healthy and helping to reduce the risk of many diseases such as diabetes, certain types of cancers and heart disease.|
4th – 5th Grade This January we’ll begin Fitness gram components testing incorporated into relay race activities, games, obstacle course activities, and testing drills. These components include cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. Fitness gram can be used by students to help them in personal fitness program planning, by teachers to determine student needs and to help guide students in program planning. For each of the areas of fitness, a test is performed by each student to determine their strength in each component. These particular tests were designed to enforce proper technique of certain exercises and also to promote personal health rather than competition among students. Students will receive a criterion-based computer analysis of their test results. This analysis will go home with their report cards.
*Please have your child wear comfortable clothes and sneakers in the GYM!
