Welcome to the Fun Zone of Learning – Movement and Health! February, 2017

Dear Families,

Below are some of the units we’ll study during this month of February. Have fun discussing them with your children. Our goal is to value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction. Some examples of activities that build these skills include demonstrations, communication, partner work, and group discussions.

In 1st grade, students will learn that we discover and explore the world through our five senses. We learn about our world when we use our five senses at the same time. They will learn basic components of the sensory nervous system and discover how each interacts with the brain. Through developmentally appropriate activities students will be able to identify the five senses and the body part(s) associated with each. Students will be able to name healthy behaviors that keep the senses working properly by participating in skill and knowledge building exercises.

In 2nd grade, students will explore the five senses in different “situations” and drills presented during the unit. Students will learn that we discover and explore the world through our five senses. We learn about our world when we use our five senses at the same time. The sense of sight helps us recognize each other and learn about color, motion and distance. The sense of hearing helps us learn from each other through communication. Sound can produce patterns. The sense of touch helps us learn about our world by feeling it and learning the size, texture and shape of things. The sense of smell helps us enjoy life and helps us learn about unsafe conditions. Taste helps us, among other things, to select and enjoy food. Students will be able to name and participate in healthy behaviors that keep the senses working properly by participating in skill and knowledge building exercises.

*Please have your child wear comfortable clothes and sneakers in the Movement and Health class!

Truly Yours,
