Welcome to the Fun Zone of Learning – Physical Education! February, 2017

Dear Families,

Have fun discussing games and exercise activities with your children. Our goal is to value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction. Some examples of activities that build this skill include demonstrations, communication, partner work, and group discussions. Below are some of the units we’ll study during this month of February.

Kindergarten – In February we’ll finish Fitnessgram activities.  We incorporate the use of fitness gram components into relay race activities; obstacle course activities and teamwork building games to further improve cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility. Children will participate in yoga and endurance exercises that foster flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and body composition.

1st Grade – In February we’ll finish Fitness gram activities.  We incorporate the use of fitness gram components into relay race activities; obstacle course activities and/or teamwork building games to further improve their cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility. Children will participate in yoga and endurance exercises that foster flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and body composition.

2nd – 3rd Grade In February we’ll finish Fitnessgram activities. The second and third grade Fitness gram test is an introduction and a preparation to the health-related components of fitness.  These components include cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.  Students learn the proper way to perform exercises that improve strength and muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility as well.  When performing these exercises, students are also taught the muscles being used for each different exercise. Some type of strength and endurance training is incorporated into each and every lesson throughout the unit. These components are important in staying healthy and helping to reduce the risk of many diseases such as diabetes, certain types of cancers and heart disease.
4th – 5th Grade  In February we’ll finish Fitnessgram activities. Fitnessgram has components important to support healthy fitness zone of the human body. These components include cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Test is going to be performed by each student within each of the areas of fitness to determine their strength in each component.  Fitnessgram components can be used in students’ personal fitness program planning. These particular tests were designed to enforce proper technique of certain exercises and also to promote personal health rather than competition among students.  Students will receive a criterion-based computer analysis of their test results.  This analysis will go home with their report cards at the end of the current school year.

*Please have your child wear comfortable clothes and sneakers in the GYM!
