I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our TAOTS families. My name is Jared Dubin and I will be your child’s music teacher this year.
This is my first year teaching at TAOTS, as well as in the NYC Department of Education. I hold teaching licenses in Music, Pre-K – 12th grade in the states of NY and CT. I hold a Masters in Arts in performance from CUNY Queens College and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Western Connecticut State University. Prior to teaching at TAOTS, I taught for the past six years at various charter and Catholic schools in New York City, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. Previous to that, I played professionally aboard Princess Cruises and taught public high school in Connecticut. As a professional trombonist, I have had the opportunity to lead various jazz groups and perform with many different bands at such notable venues as Webster Hall, Irving Plaza, The Knitting Factory, The Paramount, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Gramercy Theater, Sullivan Hall, and the Kennedy Center.
I am looking forward to working with all of your children and meeting each of you this school year. Feel free to contact me at any point throughout the school year at JDubin@taots.org.
The Music Program
The music program combines elements of the Orff-Schulwerk approach and the Kodaly teaching method to create a unique child-centered curriculum designed around the National Standards for Music Education and the NYC Blueprint for the Arts. Every child has the same opportunity in music class to play instruments, sing songs, move and dance, and create through improvisation, composition, and dramatic play. Lessons are carefully sequenced to allow each child to fully participate at their current individual skill level. Children are encouraged to explore their musicality at home and share their discoveries with their classmates. Lessons are carefully sequenced to allow each child to fully participate at their current individual skill level. Each grade will participate in the music program as follows:
- Grades K -2: Music and Brain (class piano), singing, movement and dance
- Grades 3-5: recorder, percussion, xylophone, singing
In addition, all 3rd through 5th graders will have the opportunity to sign up for band. Due to a limited number of instrumental lesson periods and school instruments, students will be selected based on a lottery.
