School Reopening Updates 2020 8/20/20

August 20, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It was great seeing so many of you at last week’s virtual meeting.  Since our virtual meeting, our goal of providing the maximum number of students receiving in-person instruction while following all the safety and health guidelines has remained the same. However, through the process of creating three cohorts to fit Model 2, we realized that another model might be more conducive and appropriate for the TAOTS’ community.

In collaboration with the Superintendent and the School Leadership Team, which met virtually on August 20th 2020, we have decided to change to Model 1B for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. In this model, there will be two in-person student groups and one fully remote group. This model will allow for 2-3 days a week for in-person instruction and we believe will maximize opportunities for student learning.  Again we carefully took into consideration the square footage of our classrooms, social distancing parameters, class size and staffing.  The minutes to this meeting can be found on our school’s website in the School Leadership Team (SLT) section and then click onto the SLT Minutes: TAOTS SLT Google Drive Folder.

Model 1B

model 1b

What you need to know about Model 1B:

Model 1B involves 2 – 3 Days Per Week with rotating Mondays / Two In-Person Cohorts & One Fully Remote

  • The Model will incorporate two in-person cohorts of students and one remote.
    • Provides regularity on days per week with some variation by week (e.g. Group A is in-person every Tuesday & Wednesday, as well as every other Monday. Group B is in-person every Thursday & Friday, as well as every other Monday).
    • This model will accommodate for ½ of students to be in the building.
  • Group A & Group B: In person learning 2 – 3 days per week (5 days every 2 weeks); remote learning for non-in person days.
  • Group D: remote every day; consists of students who opt out of in-person instruction.

We have begun to assign students to cohorts and you will be provided with that information on August 26th and are now starting to get information on the parameters, guidance, and plans for school opening. As previously mentioned, this school year will be very different from what we have experienced in the past.  Overall, it is crucial that we maintain a positive and safe learning environment for our students by following the directives of the DOE and CDC guidelines.

The DOE will continue to host Parent Information sessions, and send the latest updates for the Fall reopening of schools.  Be sure to also look at  Return to School 2020-2021 on the DOE website for the latest reopening information. We also include all of this information on our school’s website www.taots.org which is translated into all languages.

Next – August Planning and Preparation:

Now that we have been approved for Model 1B, we have begun planning to implement Model 1B framework into our school program, schedules and procedures.  We will accommodate families with siblings at P.S. 682.

We understand there are questions regarding this and we will continue to provide you with the most up-to-date information that is given to us by the NYC DOE.  Please understand that we are awaiting further guidance from the DOE and all information will continue to be relayed to you in a timely manner.

I hope you all have a healthy and safe end to the summer and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
